What's trending in bathroom remodeling?

Thinking about remodeling your bathroom and don't know where to start?

Start with what your goal is and what you are looking to achieve. A lot of homeowners make the mistake of dreaming of the bath they want, start their design, then lose track of their main intentions and go over budget and get discouraged. If you stick to your main objective you will find that remodeling a bath is not as expensive as you may think and may even leave room for additional accessories like radiant floor, rain heads and anti fog mirrors.

So before you start you need to consider whether the existing footprint is going to stay the same. Meaning tub, shower, toilet and vanity going to stay where they are currently located, then think design. Whether your looking to remodel a powder room, a kids hall bath, a master bath or going all out and doing a master spa start with searching web sites and magazines. Unless your a designer it's very difficult to put together a bath and all its components without images.

So what's trending?

Shower/Tub Wall Tile

Ceramic subway tile has become extremely popular for shower and tub surrounds. Subway tile comes in many different dimensions with 3x6 being the most popular. There are also many textures such as crackle and beveled. The advantage of using subway tile is that it goes with any design you plan on for the remainder of the bath. Subway tile doesn't leave design limitations like natural stone and porcelain. It also leaves a nice clean look allowing tile accenting, hardware, vanity, etc to take a more leading role to design.

Floor Tile

No trends and no limits to design. This is where you can explore and have fun. The only place I am seeing a trend is in powder rooms. Some homeowners are opting to use hardwood flooring in powder rooms to match existing in house.

Kids bath. Porcelain seems to be more popular in kids and rightly so due to its surface texture, affordability, various dimensions, durability and colors.

Master bath. Natural stone seems to be more popular for many reasons. Texture, color, high end look, options and a lot more. When selecting a natural stone there are literally no limits to dimensions and patterns. You can use rectangular, square, multi sized patterns, mosaic and inlays.

Heated Floor

Radiant heated floors are growing in popularity and being requested on almost every bath job I propose. Imagine it, walking into your bath in the winter and feeling a warm floor under your bare feet! The best part of this accessory is that its not as expensive as you may think and manufacturers have made huge improvements to the elements and the installation is very simple. A must have in a master bath!

Custom Niches

A must in every shower and tub surround. Built into the wall and able to accommodate your shampoos, soaps etc. Accenting tile as the background has no limits and adds the wow factor if that's what you are looking for. If not you can keep it simple and have the same tile run through which makes a niche virtually not noticeable. Either way a must in every new bath.
